What's the Fuss About? Hyrdogenated Oils Really That Bad?



Sorry guys for being a day late on those answers! (I needed to nurse my "little dude" back to health....Thank you for your patience:) I know you've been waiting in nervous anticipation!

drum roll please...


1.   Hydrogenated oil is only one molecule away from being

          b. plastic! Yum! Can you imagine that inside your body? When you eat anything containing this "material" your blood becomes thicker causing your heart to work a lot harder to pump blood. This is one reason consuming hydrogenated oils contributes to high blood pressure. Also, remember it falls into the exclusively "flabtastic" preservative club. In fact, because all the enzymatic activity has been neutralized in the hydrogenating process, it takes a looooooooooong time to break down. No wonder "our oceans are starting to turn into plastic...."
2.   These foods often contain hydrogenated oil
          e. a and c. Ice cream and Kellogg's Fiber Bars, along with cake and brownie mixes, chips, margarine, prepackaged cookies, coffee creamer, saltine crackers, some cereals, and Kraft macaroni and cheese...among other things. I highly recommend checking those food labels thoroughly!

3.    Processed foods contain this percentage of hydrogenated oil
          a. 90%! Scary statistic. I was at the grocery store today looking at the labels of many popular foods and found this to be true. But, have no fear. There are better alternatives without having to totally transform your cupboard. Next week I will be writing a post on what "you can eat!" Til then, a helpful hint: eat foods that are raw and as close to their natural state as possible. "This means more fruits and veggies, and if possible, organic local meats. The more real foods from nature you eat, the less packaged and processed foods you'll consume."

4.    Why do manufacturers use hydrogenated oil?
          e.  c and d, acts as a preservative, increasing shelf life and is cheaper than other oils. Sad, but true. Many of those name brands you so love much do not have your best interests at heart. It's all about the American dollar my friends.
" Food processing companies and the companies that own the patents on this process would lose billions of dollars if they had to change their method of food production of hydrogenating oils. The main reason oils are hydrogenated is that the hydrogenation of the oils act as a preservative. This leads to increased shelf life of products and less returns or spoilage of products. But at what cost is it to the human body?" (David Lawrence Dewey)

 
5.    What are some effects of eating foods with hydrogenated oils?
          b.  increases breast cancer in women, among other things:

 
  • Promotes cancers: breast cancer, prostate cancer, colon cancer
  • Results in low birth weight infants
  • Raises LDL (bad) cholesterol and lower HDL (good) cholesterol
  • Raises blood sugar levels and promotes weight gain
  • Interferes with the absorption of essential fatty acids and DHA
  • Impairs brain function and damages brain cells
  • Accelerates tumor growth
  • Accelerates the progress of type-2 diabetes
  • Raises serum cholesterol
  • Impairs immune system function
  • Promotes attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
  • Impairs development of the brains of fetuses
  • Causes gallbladder disease
  • Causes liver disease
  • Causes 30,000 deaths per year in the United States alone
  • Clogs blood, makes blood cells stick together
  • Blocks the body's creation of natural pain-reducing hormones (eicosanoids)
  • Creates nutritional deficiencies of healthy oils and essential fatty acids (EFAs)
  • Promotes cystic fibrosis
  • Lowers essential fatty acids in the breast milk of nursing mothers
  • Clogs artery walls and promotes atherosclerosis
  • Cause gum disease and rotted teeth
  • Lowers tissue oxygen intake
  • Causes infertility
  • Directly damages blood vessels
  • Causes high blood pressure
  • Weaken cell walls and compromises cellular structure
  • Causes dandruff and acne (natural news)

6.    Hydrogenated oil

           e.  b and c, comes from soybean oil and slows down thyroid function. Because hydrogenated oil stays in the body longer, it creates excess fat that becomes hard to lose. Furthermore, in most cases, hydrogenated oil originates from soybean oil. And soybean oil slows down your thyroid causing a drop in energy levels, which ultimately affects the metabolism. 


7.    It's better to eat foods that contain "partially hydrogenated oil" over "hydrogenated oil."
          b.  false. Dieticians claim that in fact partially hydrogenated oil is more harmful than full hydrogenated oil. Both are bad in my opinion, especially when the later is solid at room temperature! Scary! Here's an interesting article to follow up on both variations.
